The Catalinbread Formula No. 55 is a foundation overdrive pedal that recreates the classic Fender tweed 5E3 Deluxe preamp. Using an all-discrete JFET-based signal path, it delivers authentic tweed amp tones. It offers wide-ranging dynamics, from clean to saturated overdrive, making it suitable for players seeking versatility and tonal accuracy.
Authentic Tweed Amp Response
The Formula No. 55 replicates the preamp section of the 5E3 Deluxe amp. Its Volume and Tone controls mirror the original circuitry, providing a natural and responsive sound that reacts to your guitar’s volume and picking dynamics.
HI/LO Gain Modes
- LO / GREEN Mode: Lower gain, cleaner response, and enhanced harmonic bounce. Ideal for chord comping and vintage-style clean tones.
- HI / RED Mode: Higher gain with saturation and overdrive potential. Perfect for hot-rodded amp tones and expressive picking dynamics.
Master Volume Control
The Master knob offers high output levels, allowing you to dial in fat clean tones or push your amp into overdrive. This ensures flexibility whether playing rhythm or lead lines.
Tone and Presence Controls
Tone: Functions like the original Deluxe amp. At lower Volume, it provides flat response or smoky cleans; higher settings give upper-mid aggression and bite.
Presence: Adjusts frequencies around 5kHz to tailor the top end to your pickups and amp, giving clarity and definition in the mix.
Volume Control
Acts as the gain control for the pedal. Adjust it for levels of overdrive, from clean to fully saturated, while rolling back your guitar’s volume cleans up the signal instantly.
Power Options
Can run on a 9V battery or 9-18V DC power supply. 18V provides more headroom and attack, while 9V produces softer saturation. Battery operation is simple, with easy replacement through the bottom plate.

Returns are incredibly simple. Please log into your account, find your item you wish to return and follow the prompts to make a return. If you do not have an account, click here to find your order and make a return.

You will receive a full refund when you return an item in its original manufacturer’s packaging, undamaged and unmarked. If the item you are returning is priced at less than $35, you will be charged a 15% restocking fee. Please note you will not be refunded any shipping charges.

You have 30 days to make a return. During the holiday season, from November 1 to December 31, we extend the return window to 60 days.

If your order has been noticeably damaged in transit, we strongly recommend that you refuse delivery and notify us immediately. Claims for missing items or items damaged in transit must be made within 48 hours of delivery.
